What is the demoscene?

Short answer: A subculture in the computer underground culture universe, dealing with the creative and constructive side of technology, proving that a computer can be used for much more than writing a letter in MS-Word and hence emphasize on computer technology as just another medium that can transport ideas and styles, show off skills and express opinions etc.

Another theory says, that it's just a bunch of boozing computer nerds, programming weird, useless multimedia stuff.

  In Bulgaria the demo scene is a unknown phenomenon. In Europe this cult status form of art became hyperpopular in the last 20 years. Yet in our country we still don't know nothing about it, despite the fact that Bulgaria is already a member of the European Union. When we talk about demo, the last thing that pops up in our minds is high-tech multimedia installation. That's why Georgi Penkov (aka EXo) and Kamen Merachev (aka kmn) will join the Upgrade! Sofia for a event that threatens to unveal the mistery of the 10 MB files that give birth to a 20 minute high-quality video. The one of the king lecture will be held at club Apple and will present the whole history of the demo scene (coming from the '80 hacker scene) and it's development during the years. Examples of cult demo productions will be given, the ideas behind them, the basics of the making -of process, as well as resentations of the best demogroups. The gathering will turn into a party with special DJ appearances by DTX (click & tech sounds), EXo (dubstep), CooH (experimental dub). The event is supported by Mirizma.org, HMSU.org and InterSpace.

Демосцената е феномен, непознат в България. Когато говорим за демо, последото нещо, за което се сещаме е високотехнологична мултимедийна инсталация, която се render-ва в реално време. Въпреки, че вече сме европейска държава, тази култува форма на дигитален арт, развиал се през последните 20 години и хиперпопулярен в Европа, е почти непозната у нас. Ето защо Георги Пенков (EXo@hmsu) и Камен Мерачев (kmn@blender.cult.bg), с подкрепата на Upgrade! Sofia смятат да разкрият в клуб Apple (екс-Кокарача, зад х-л Рила) тайната на това, как от 10мбайтов файл се ражда 20-минутен висококачествен клип. В една двучасова лекция ще бъде представена историята на демосцената (чиито корени се крият още в хакерската култура на 80-те), развитието и през годините, като и ще бъдат
прожектирани множество култови продукции. Събирането ще продължи с парти на Мirizma.org, в което ще вземат участие ди джеите DTX (с клик и тек звук), EXo/HMSU/MIRIZMA (дъбстеп), CooH/HMSU (дъби ексериментализми).

EXo
Behind the codename EXo (mind the capital X) we find Georgi Penkov - a person known for his number of activites and interests. 26 years old, he has already gained a definite experience with multimedia arts - as a web animator, music journalist, editor in a gaming magazine, DJ, producer, promoter and even beatbox/djembe performer. He has always been interested in all expirmental art forms. His interest into music dates some 10 years back in time, when he was into democoding. Toghether with Martin Hristov he is the author of the only two real oldskool bulgarian demos Idleness and Water Illusions, released officialy by the Ancient Pain demo group. (coded in C/Assembler in 1996-1997). Georgi is as well author of the few materials in the bulgarian press related with the demoscene, that were released in the 1998-2002 period in major bulgarian magazines (Computer, PC Mania, Capital weekly). Penkov is also known for being the iniciator of one of the most successfull series of lectures, that were held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University and introduced the Perl programming language for the first time for bulgarian students.

Kamen Merachev (aka kmn)
His interest in 3D graphics and animation date from his early years as a child. The last two years he started to appear in public - from 3D programming, modelling and animation to VJ sets during electronic music parties. Guest appearance and presentation for the Upgrade! Sofia as part of the Po Vision VJ group in March 2006. Cofounder of the Bulgarian Blender Community. Lecturer at the Vision forum for 3D graphics in Veliko Tarnovo 2006. Organizer of the Blender workshop at the OpenFest 2006. In 2000 he met Georgi Penkov and found shared interest in the demo scene.  

EXo
Зад краткия псевдоним EXo се крие Георги Пенков - човек с разностранни увлечения и занимания. 26-годишен, той вече има зад гърба си сериозен опит с мултимедийните изкуства - като уеб аниматор, музикален журналист, редактор в списание за компютърни игри, DJ, продуцент, промоутър и най-вече запален меломан. Отворен е към всеки нов дигитален арт стил с достатъчна доза експеримент и идеи в него. Интересът му към правенето и смесването на музика датира от почти 10 години, но е слабо известен факта, че началото е поставено покрай заниманията му с демосцената в периода 1996-1998г. Още тогава, заедно с Мартин Христов е автор на единствените две напълно завършени български демо продукции - Idleness и Water Illusions, издадени под името на демогрупата Ancient Pain (писани на C/Assembler в периода 1996-1997).  Георги е автор на няколкото материала свързани с демосцената, които са издадени в периода 1998-2002 в издания като Компютър, PC Mania, в-к Капитал. Пенков е известен и като инициатор от един от най-успешните курсове във ФМИ на СУ - Практическо Програмиране с Perl.

Камен Мерачев
Интересите в 3Д графиката и анимация на Камен датират от ранните му детски години, но едва през последните 2 години стават публични. През години е минал през програмиране на 3Д, моделиране и анимация. От година и половина се изявява като VJ в родната електронна сцена. Предишен участник в месечните срещи на The Upgrade! (март 2006). Съосновател на Българската общност на Blender - софтуер с отворен код за 3Д моделиране/анимация. Лектор на изданието от 2006 г. на 3Д форума Вижън - гр. В.Търново. Също така води кръжок за Blender на OpenFest 2006г. Интереса му в демосцената датира от 2000г., когато се запознава с Георги Пенков, с който намират много общи интереси в тази област.
