Coffee with Sugar - Episode 4 Korea
Date: 22.03.2008
Time: 16:00 – 18:00
Location: Tea House, 11 Benkovski str
About the project:
„Coffee with sugar“ is a traveling screening program, which included selection of new media works by curators from Bulgaria, Turkey, Denmark and Korea. The aim of the project is to present works, that are connected with message of the title, where the coffee keeps us awake for everything going on in the society and the world around us and the sugar, which comes to sweeten our life with witticism and sense of humor. The curatorial idea is initiated by Galia Dimitrova form InterSpace Association, Sofia and developed by Lab.preparat from Seoul in an international exchange project, which gathers and presents works by young artists from different countries, who use new media as an artistic mean for expressing their critical position towards contemporary society. The curators compilations are shown in cafes and clubs, where the audience can communicate intimately with the works, in a cozy environment, while drinking coffee (with sugar)...
The start of „Coffee with Sugar“ project was with the Bulgarian program curated by Galia Dimitrova which was shown last summer in Seoul. After that the organizers by Lab.preparat invited three more curators from Denmark and Turkey to prepare their own programs, that were shown in the autumn in Seoul.
Now it is time for the European tour of the Korean program, compiled for “Coffee with Sugar”, which first stop is in Sofia. The Korean selection will be shown between 20th of March and 20th of April at the Tea House (Beknovski str. 11) and The Apartment (Neofit Rilski str. 68). After its premiere in Sofia, the program goes to Istanbul and Copenhagen.
The Korean selection entitled Trivia in Megalopolitan shows works by ten young artists, gathered after a contest in Korea. The jury selected works, which represent the socio-cultural intentions of Korean society while capturing the attention with their unique point of view and sense of humor. The compilation includes various works, from single channel video and performance documentation to net art and blog and aims to reach the young audience. The starting point of the selection is to examine the trivial connections in Seoul megalopolis and to reveal the usual conditions and intentions such as conspirations, frustration, following the system and impersonality in everyday life on the surface, which is the artistic code purpose. The program message is that the trivialism is a tendency of enslaving to particular insignificant things while forgetting the inner nature or the situation when we hide the common system, expressing too much ordinary things. And here comes the art, which neither disagrees nor rejects, but in the same time has this dual structure in the trivialism, which can reveal things.
For the presentation of the Korean program in Sofia, special guests are the curator Yoonsun Shin and also five of the participating artists - Sanghee Park, Yongdoo Park, Hyejin Lee, Jinjoon Lee and Mirang LIM. Three of them - Sanghee Park, Jinjoon Lee and Hyejin Lee will present their works. The presentation will be in English.
About the artists:

Sanghee PARK
Sang Hee Park's Self Camera Shot Lecture V1.0
2005, Single channel video, sound, 16' 10"
We live in a World, so called Media matrix (the fusion of creative media). Through the mass media, we read the world. Among the diverse media, Sang-hee Park who is a artist expresses herself to us via such friendly sources as Digital camera and DVD. In the Republic of Korea, the success of cyworld (blog) can be reflected to the Korea's characteristic culture, that is, the basis of judgment is not the person him or herself but other people.
Her work is neither cold nor hard to understand. With her works, the artist expect more people to make their own decision with opened conclusion rather than people who make already set conclusion with criticism. The Self-camera V1.0 can be an opportunity for people to discover oneself that is unknown. In addition, it helps to present oneself more actively or else represent oneself differently.

Yongdoo PARK
Chameleon
2004, 16mm converted to DVD, sound, 9' 00"
This story is about Park Man-Soo's family who are normal Koreans. Three generations of Park's family members, including Park himself, are telling us their own story in a comical Omnibus style. The first story is about Park's 28th great grandfather, who lived during the Joseon era. Park's great grandfather was in trouble with his elders because he cut his own hair. The second story, is about Park's father who got in trouble with the military government of Korea during the 1970's because his hair was too long. (The non-democratic Military government of Korea during the 1970's didn't even let people have the freedom to grow their hair long.) In last story, you can see how Park Man-Soo also finds himself in trouble like his great grandfather and father before him. The director tries to show us in his short film, with a family's history with hair, how silly some rules are that are meant to control us. The way he describes everyday people's lives and how they have to change because of these silly rules is comical and fun to watch, but at the same time is full of meaningful metaphors.

Hyejin LEE
2850 Inhabitants in One House
2006, Project archive, 6' 45"
Recycle wastes, such as paper boxes or egg holders, gathered from a junkyard, do make-over as suitable materials for constructing her vision reminding us of the well-known 'Habitat for Humanity International'. Due to the fact that there is no the property itself in the exhibition hall, the third method of selling Lee's property is far from satisfying anyone's greed and concerning with anybody's ownership.
Actually, you may have noticed that the price does not take its importance in the whole context of Lee's works. The time-consuming labor of piling paper residences stand for none other than the expression of the artist's affections toward the people in her community by sharing any invisible profits. In short, love, an aspiring yet humble answer to possible inquiry over her aesthetic intention, can cover the persistent pursuit for the active participation to the community.
